Alegre, the charming resort north of Cebu City, draws guests with its
island cruise but soon there will be a new spa, redesigned rooms,
and more reasons to nestle in. Walter C. Villa reports
NE LOOK AT Calangaman Island was
enough for Jess Garcia, Philippine Airlines's Assistant Vice President for Advertising, to get smitten, so when he came back he brought along Fumio Okada, the renowned Japanese panoramic photographer, to capture his island romance: Calangaman, ringed with rich foliage, lying alone in a sea of infinite blue, its long sandbar curving towards the water—an idyllic scene immortalized in the Philippine Airlines 2004 calendar.
But there are others still, some too far for the Mactan Island Hotels to offer as optional tours but just a half-hour to two-hour boat ride from the 40-room Alegre Beach Resort in Calumboyan, Sogod, a rustic town one-and-half hour drive from Mactan International Airport. There's Capitancillo Island, a small coral island with an old lighthouse; Tulang

Island, the best spot to see eagle rays and schools of large pelagic fish; Cuatro Islas, a cluster of four stunning islets with sheltered white beaches and virginal snorkeling spots; Gato Island, which resembles a seated cat, and features a natural tunnel and a sloping wall reef; and Kimod Shoal, an underwater mountain with deep wall dives frequented by sharks. If you're not keen on diving or boat trips, you can just snorkel at the 100-foot wall house reef, just a few meters off Alegre's Talisay Beach, and see damsel fish, batfish, flashlight fish, clown fish, angel fish, and occasionally, a green turtle. Alegre's efforts to preserve their house reef and environs through coral grafting, water recycling, erosion control and proper desiltation are truly laudable— enough for them to merit the Department of Tourism's Kalakbay 2001 Environmental Tourism Award and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) 16th Annual Hotel Industry 2001 Environmental Awareness Award.
But Alegre isn't just for the diving set: its intimate beach lined with palms, yellow bell, bougainvillea, and hibiscus is popular with honeymooners. And so are their rooms with a cozy
terrace and a spacious bathroom with a lovely tub. Dinner can be set at the Pavilion restaurant's terrace overlooking the beach. Or if you are booked in one of their De Luxe Oceanview Suite with garden, you can have a private barbecue party in the open complete with a waiter and a chef, and serenaded by a string quartet. By July, Michael L. Jordan, the resort's long-time manager, says, the Balinese-inspired spa will be opened. The treatments, which will center on water, will be done in an expansion seafront site beside the Crescent Cove. The rooms will undergo redesigning too using oriental materials such as rattan, bamboo, wicker, and other soft furnishings. Once finished, Jordan claims no two rooms will look the same. A DVD player will become a standard fixture in all Super De Luxe rooms. For the meantime, those things can wait. What you shouldn't miss for now is the complimentary sunset cruise to Calangaman Island every 4 PM. With the right season, bottlenose and spinner dolphins as well as pilot whales may accompany you on your trip back to Alegre for a truly magical moment.
